Summary
Hunting is part of life inRed Dead Redemption. In the Wild West, food isn’t found in a local supermarket, sitting in industrial freezers that haven’t been invented yet. If players want to get out into theRed Dead Redemptionworld and earn some dollars, then hunting is the best way forward. Yet, there are some truly difficult animals to hunt that will have the player clutching their rifle and watching their six.

The hardest animals to hunt inRed Dead Redemptioncould be either predator or prey, depending on the situation. Players will find that wildlife is not their friend, and neither is every outlaw with a holster on their waist. Hunting these animals requires patience, control, and the skill of a tracker.
6Horse
Before players think that they should go hunt horses for a cheaper alternative to beef, they should reign it in. Horses are a difficult animal to hunt, not to mindlessly kill and skin, but for their use as a trusty stead. Horses can be found all over the plains of New Austin, but players will want to hunt to find thebest horse inRed Dead Redemption.
Horses are skittish and will run away from players if they get too close. However, with a lasso at hand, players can try their best to tame a horse through the difficult riding minigame. Even then, the horse that has been tamed might not even be that good, making it a hard animal to hunt for its usefulness.

5Wolf
It’s hard to find a wolf just by its lonesome. Players can find them in various locations both day and night inRed Dead Redemption, and they will usually hunt in a pack of hungry and carnivorous canines. A pack of wolvesshould not be underestimated, as although they are weak, their numbers can overwhelm players and intimidate their horses, causing them to flee.

Wolves usually attack the player from behind and will do their best to control the situation with their numbers, as if they are going to herd the player into a kill zone. They are hard animals to hunt due to their numbers, but claiming their bounty isa good enough reward.
4Rattlesnake
A nimble and cold-blooded predator, the rattlesnake will slither and stalk the dry grounds of New Austin. Players might find themselves wandering around the desert without a care in the world until they feel the sharp sting of a snake biting down on their ankles. It hurts, it’s annoying, and the rattlesnake will slither away before it can be shot or stabbed in response to its bite.
To make hunting a rattlesnake harder still, they are extremely small and well camouflaged in the world ofRed Dead Redemption. This means that they canblend in like an expert predator, making them hard to hunt since they refuse to be caught.

3Grizzly Bear
It’s quite hard to miss a grizzly bear. Their hulking size, vicious roar, and the fact that they will stampede through the forest tohunt down John Marstonand eat both him and his hat; make a grizzly bear a violent predator. Players will want to ensure their guns are loaded and ready to fire when approaching a grizzly bear, as these beasts will eat bullets like they do salmon.

Players can find grizzly bears across the wilderness and tall trees ofRed Dead Redemption. They are a fairly rare encounter, and they certainly won’t be in packs. However, finding a grizzly bear is half the battle, and the other half involvesshooting them dead, as no honey will calm these great terrors down.
2Bobcat
Stalking through the deserts of Mexico, or the snowy terrain of Tall Trees, the Bobcat waits for its prey. Bobcats are a rare encounter, and definitely, one that hunters might not want to run into due to their vicious claws and clamping bite. Bobcats are notably weaker than other larger predator cats inRed Dead Redemption, but that does not mean they are not to be feared.
Bobcats are perhaps the fastest animal inRed Dead Redemption, and players will want to try and locate them for their loot. Players can skin a killed bobcat for its resources, including its fur and claws which willfetch players a great pricefrom vendors. However, finding one and fighting one is a difficulty in itself.

1Cougar
Perhaps the most fearsome predator inRed Dead Redemption, the cougar is not one to trifle with. A ball of yarn won’t stop this oversized cat, and neither will just one bullet. Cougars can be difficult to kill due to their speed and violent nature, leaving players at the mercy of their claws and bite, which can easily kill them within just two swipes.
Horses will always buck players and run to save themselves when a cougar is near. A cougar will easily knock the player down and run off, only to come back in for another attack, leaving the player dazed and confused. The cougar is talented at silence, meaning players might not hear them until it is already too late.

Red Dead Redemptionis currently available on PS3 and Xbox 360. The game is set to release on Nintendo Switch and PS4 on July 18, 2025.
